“Call me at 2 am and I would come!” he told her giving her a very sharp glare. She bit her lips effectively shutting up. She heard him take a deep sigh. She didn’t know what to say next. Should she continue to ramble just like she had been doing for past hour?
“I don’t understand! Why do you still care about him, when he clearly doesn’t care about you least bit?” he asked her, this time his frustration was clear in his eyes. She vaguely wondered whether he was frustrated to always have to listen to her stupid-love-life?
‘May be he is frustrated at you! You only need him when you want a shoulder to cry on after having fought with your boyfriend. I mean, ex-boyfriend.’ Her mind screamed at her. She winced at her own thoughts.
She wanted to tell him, that she didn’t care for her so called ex-boyfriend anymore. She wanted to tell finally, she had took him out of her system- mind, soul, heart and life. But he didn’t let her complete, he continued without waiting for her response.
“Why do you even keep going back to him?” he asked her. This time expecting an answer.
She bit her lips again. “because I love him?” she replied. Her mind screamed ‘loved. You don’t love him anymore!’
“But he doesn’t deserve that!” he interjected. She sighed.
After a moment of silence, he asked again, “Do you want to go back to him?”
She could see anxiousness written over his face. He was waiting for her reply with bated breath. She gulped and took a deep breath. “No.”
This time he smiled, showing her his bright white tooth, “Good. I don’t want you to go back either, he is not meant for you”
She gave a him a fainted smile, “You are right, I guess..” she said sipping her coffee. They stood there, sipping their coffee in a comfortable silence. But she could feel his eyes on her. She wondered for a millionth time that day, ‘What would it be to be his lover?’ and her mind yelled at her again, “He is your best friend!”
“Do you still love him?” he asked her as they walked back to their houses.
“No.” she told him.
He didn’t say anything. He just her hugged her tight. She felt breathless. Without a word, she had realized one thing; This wasn’t just a friendship anymore, atleast not to her.
“Good. I don’t like you loving him either.” He said, before walking away.
As they walked back to their houses, there was one question that kept haunting their brains.
Were they falling for each other?
Sometimes, every relationship starts here. Best friends turned lovers. And sometimes words never come out, feelings never understood; they remain as best friends for life. I could never tell which one’s better.
